The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) is a corporate body established under the Energy Regulation Act (Cap. 73.02) of the Laws of Malawi. MERA is mandated to regulate the energy sector in Malawi in a fair, transparent, efficient, and cost-effective manner for the benefit of the consumers and operators.

MERA regulates all commercial energy undertakings in the following areas:

  1. Electricity generation, transmission, distribution, importation, exportation, single buying and system market operation.
  2. Liquid Fuels and Gas importation, transportation, storage, wholesaling, and retailing.

 

MERA’s main functions include licencing, setting energy prices and charges, standard development and compliance monitoring, complaints handling and dispute resolution, and levy collection.
